PHILIPSBURG--Minister of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transportation and Telecommunications Claret Connor welcomed delegates to the International Congress for Caribbean Archaeology (IACA) that opened in Sonesta Maho Beach Resort and Casino on Monday. The conference, which ends on Saturday, brought together more than 200 delegates from 23 countries.

Research papers, guest lectures, field trips on island and to Anguilla, and cultural receptions are part of the congress.

He thanked the congress for choosing St. Maarten, as it has economic benefits for the country. “As a country in development, we must clearly identify these advantages and find ways to build upon them while adding to our existing products. For example, our niche tourism, marine activities, agriculture, financial services and logistics are all areas identified in our National Economic Framework as viable options for St. Maarten.”

The local host organization for the IACA meeting is St. Maarten Archaeological Centre Simarc, headed by resident archaeologist Jay Haviser, in cooperation with the French side and Anguilla.

Connor encouraged delegates to have a “very fruitful and productive” congress. “Do take some time to enjoy our island’s hospitality and diverse cuisine. May this assembly and visit to St. Maarten be an enjoyable one, and I HOPE to see you back soon.”
