MADAME ESTATE, St. Maarten  – I AM SXM Foundation has brought together two of the country's garbage collecting and cleaning companies to assist St. Maarten Zoo with its extensive maintenance and cleaning work.

Leonard Enterprise and Soualiga Waste Management, though the intercession of I AM SXM, have committed to cleaning maintenance of the zoo every two weeks. Crews from both companies will work together on a selected day to ensure the zoo is in tiptop shape.

Adding to the bi-weekly cleaning, the two companies will do a general maintenance every month.

The combination of the cleaning days is expected to keep the zoo in a manageable and beautiful state for its full-time occupants and its visitors.

The current cleaning commitment from the two companies to the zoo is for seven months.

St. Maarten Zoo, under its board and management, has been undergoing a revival. Repairs to the animal enclosures are on the way. Upgrading of the play area and petting zoo are still to be upgraded. The zoo is still battling with its limited resources to meet all its goals.

Tamara Leonard aka Bush-T, who is a strong supporter of I AM SXM, was made aware about the immediate needs of zoo via a post on Facebook from Manny Almirakis of Tantra Nightclub and Sanctuary calling on the community to support the renaissance of the zoo.

"Manny brought this to my attention via the Facebook post. It was not a difficult call to answer," said Leonard. "I have seen the work and drive of the board to get the zoo upgraded. Their commitment deserves commending and support," she said.

"Both companies jumped at the chance to do this community service. Neither company are strangers to community service or support," Leonard said.

The companies have all contributed to various activities and individuals as has the non-for-profit I AM SXM Foundation.

The zoo plays an important role in the community and as part of international conservation efforts. The institution houses several species that require attention and care lest they become endangered. The zoo also houses exotic animals that were in need of protection and care.

St. Maarten Zoo on Arch Road in Madame Estate opens Monday to Sunday from 9:00am to 5:00pm. For more details on exhibits, call 543-2030 or visit www.stmaartenzoo.com.
