Unbiased look at the Sint Maarten Elections
PHILIPSBURG, St. Maarten - Lloyd Paul and Cecil Nicholas, both board members of the United St. Maarten Party (USP), are among a group of individuals who have come together in an effort to raise support for the storm stricken Caribbean Island Dominica.
Together with former member of Parliament, Romaine Laville, Mr. Serrant and others who have strong ties to Dominica, the group is collaborating with the St. Maarten Red Cross and a number of businesses on the island who, they claim, have offered their full support to their efforts.
Romaine Laville contacted Prime Minister Rooseveld Skerritt and other government officials in Dominica to ascertain how the group could best assist the island with its most urgent needs following the devastations of Tropical Storm Erika that affected the island on Thursday, August 27th.
The group quickly managed to acquire a 40 ft container which will be filled with needed items to be shipped to Dominica this coming weekend.
Manpower will also be provided as a number of volunteers will leave the island during the weekend to assist the government of Dominica in its rescue and clean up efforts.
During an interview last Monday on View Point on PJD 3 radio hosted by Fernando Clark, the group explained that some of the most needed items are water, tin food stuff, clothing, baby foods and clothing, bedding and medications. The group appealed to the St. Maarten community to come together for the devastated island and assist in whatever way they can. Lloyd Paul said that "People can bring their stuff to the container located on the Ring Road opposite the Sport Auditorium in Philipsburg.
We welcome anything that can bring relief to the people who are in dire need of these items". Mr. Serrant noted that "The response from the general public is very satisfying and we encourage people to continue bringing whatever they can until the container is filled". The container is scheduled to leave for Dominica between Friday and Sunday.
