Unbiased look at the Sint Maarten Elections
St. Maarten – Rumors about the makeup of the new cabinet and its possible consequences for seats in parliament spread rapidly yesterday after the fall of the Gumbs cabinet. One such rumor was that Maurice Lake, now independent, would return as the Minister of Vromi; that move would have opened a slot in parliament for Maria Buncamper-Molanus. The seat would fall back to the United People’s party – temporarily shifting the balance of power, but Buncamper-Molanus was then said to declare herself independent and join the new coalition.
However, MP Lake squashed the story: “I will keep my set in parliament,†he told this newspaper yesterday evening.
We could not get confirmation last night that Jorien Wuite, currently secretary-general at the Ministry of Education, would become the new Minister of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transport and Telecommunication. Democratic Party policy advisor Emil Lee could not be reached either. He is rumored to become the new minister of Public Health, Social Development and Labor.
