PHILIPSBURG:--- Minister of Finance and Acting Minister of VROMI Ardwell Irion announced on Wednesday that the government of St. Maarten intends to hold companies accountable for works they were paid for and it was not done or not completed.
The Minister said that it is unfortunate the government paid certain companies to conduct repair works and these works were not conducted. He said some companies were paid over four to five years ago and to date, no work was done, as such the government of St. Maarten will recover the monies paid to these companies and also hold them accountable.
Asked how many companies government intends to go after the Minister said that the list is not yet completed and in his view, these companies will be added to the list. The Minister also could not say how much money was paid out and works were not executed or completed.
He said the process to recover the funds already started as the bailiff already has the documents to serve the companies or persons involved.
Irion said irregularities were also found at the very top where they found that monies were paid, and no work was done.
The government of St. Maarten paid for the reinforcement of the Prince Bernard Bridge and Fort Amsterdam and these works were not completed based on the terms of reference.
