>PHILIPSBURG:--- The Leader of the Democratic Party of St. Maarten Prime Minister Sarah Wescot-Williams released a statement regarding the outcome of the 2014 elections on Monday. The Prime Minister highlighted the way forward in her statement released amidst ongoing negotiations regarding the formation of Government; "The Democratic Party of St. Maarten wishes to firstly thank the Almighty for his guidance of our people during the campaign and election behind us.
It has not been a spotless campaign by a far stretch, but neither have we reached a point of no return as far as campaigns are concerned.

"Then I thank all the voters who came out and exercised their right to vote for the candidate of their choice. You have spoken.

"I congratulate the UPP, NA, USP with their respective successes at the polls. In a very special way I profoundly thank the (preliminary) 2334 persons who voted for a candidate of the Democratic Party of St. Maarten. I don't wish to offend any one, but those are "true" votes and we ran a focused campaign. With this in mind, I say to the DP candidates and supporters, "Real and lasting change is always slow in coming. Keep the faith."

"There is a message coming out of Friday's election. Not one we necessarily like, but a message nevertheless. What does it tell us as a society? We of the Democratic Party have been given a chance and it is up to us to decide how to use it. Having played a big part in the St. Maarten governments since 2010, it is evident that openness with the people of St. Maarten and transparency in government business are critical issues.

"It is too early to say exactly how, but the Democratic Party will ensure that the message WE got from the voters and our Party's principles will be the guiding lights for us in this new political landscape of St. Maarten," concluded Prime Minister Wescot-Williams in her address.
