St Maarten Elections In The News

Some Coalition MPs afraid of new elections, wants their Ministers to resign but held back by UPP Leader.

>PHILIPSBURG:--- Information reaching SMN News states that the two Members of Parliament that are supporting the UPP/ De Weever/ LRM coalition allegedly wants their Ministers to resign and does not want new elections to be called now since they know that they have lost credibility within the community and will not be re-elected if new elections is called now.
A source close to the minority coalition that is holding the island (government) hostage wants their Ministers to resign and to respect the decision given by the Governor of St. Maarten. The source said an UPP MP is also supporting the two Independents but they are held up by their party leader and Prime Minister who are busy signing off of on some big projects.
SMN News learnt that MP
Cornelius de Weever
, MP Leona Marlin and MP Johan Janchi Leonard believes that the Council of Ministers should resign and not continue to hold the government hostage. One of their main arguments is that if elections are held now they will surely not get re-elected since none of the three got enough votes to elect themselves in the 2014 elections. The source said that the three MPs feel that respect must be given to the Governor of St. Maarten who already issued his ruling.
However, their party/coalition leader and the Prime Minister of St. Maarten
Marcel Gumbs
is not of the same opinion and they have decided to ignore the Governor’s ruling and have been seeking legal advice from various persons. One of those persons SMN News learnt is a member of the constitutional court who have been advising the Minister of Justice. While it has been confirmed that the member of the constitutional court is advising the Minister of Justice on other matters it is not known if the person in question put his advice on this matter in writing to the Gumbs cabinet.
