Unbiased look at the Sint Maarten Elections
PHILIPSBURG, St. Maarten – Positive Foundation and its partners continue their Breast Cancer Awareness activities with free clinical screenings at doctor's clinics and a number of special events throughout this month.
So far over 150 women have received free clinical breast examinations provided by the Family Medical Practice, St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) and Zamora Perez Clinic.
Dr. Grace Spencer will also offer free clinical screenings today at her clinic on Oleander Road #139, Saunders, from 9:00am to 12:00pm.
Free clinical screenings for women will be offered at Union Road Clinic on Union Road, Cole Bay, on Wednesday, October 15, from 10:00am to 4:00pm.
Simpson Bay Medical Clinic will offer free clinical screening on Friday, October 17, from 1:00pm to 3:00pm.
During the free clinical breast examination screening on Saturday, October 18 at the Dutch Quarter Medical Clinic, students from AUC will be providing instructions for breast self-examinations from 9 am - 1 pm.
Elektralyets Foundation in collaboration with Positive Foundation also present their annual Pink Phit Phabulous Walk-a-thon. You can participate in the Pink, Phit and Phabulous Walk on Sunday from 5:00am to 10:30am from Divico in Cole Bay.
Participants will receive a Yoplait T-shirt for the walk by either donating US $5 on the day of the walk, purchasing Yoplait at participating supermarkets or donating US $5 for the Yoplait T-shirt at Divico Cash & Carry. A portion of the funds donated will go to Positive Foundation, Still Beautiful foundation and Elektralyets Foundation.
The walk-a-thon route is from Divico Colebay, Union Road, Causeway, Airport Boulevard, Simpsonbay, Colebay, Up the hill onto Link 2, Link 1, Boardwalk, Juancho Yrasquin Boulevard, Pondfill, Prins Bernard Bridge, Bush Road, LB Scot Road, ending at Emilio Wilson Estate.
The Breast Cancer Awareness Gala Movie Night will be on October 23. T-shirts are on sale for US $20 at Easy Print on Coralita Road (1-721-5580). Only a limited quantity of 400 T-shirts are available. Positive Foundation urges all women who want to attend the movie night to get their tickets early.
The recently fifth annual Pink Parade saw some 1,000 participants take to the streets of Philipsburg to spread the message about early detection of breast cancer is the best prevention and way to save lives.
The Generation New Status Drum Band, led by Youmay Dormoy, and The Boys' Brigade Band provided the beats for the walkers.
The parade participants was comprised breast cancer warriors and survivors such as A walk for a Hero - Lydia Vanterpool, Still Beautiful- Marcella "Maso" Loblack, Bush T Tamara Leonard, and Love Life Jill Fourie. Pauline Gumbs was also part of the parade in costume designed by her depicting breast cancer warriors and survivors.
Parade participants also remembered women who lost the fight such as Shirley Van Heyningen-Richards, Rosemary Hutchinson, Marjorie Muller and Brigitte Reiph
President of Parliament Gracita Arrindell, outgoing Prime Minister Sarah Wescot-Williams and Health Minister Cornelius de Weever were also part of the parade.
Businesses included CIBC First Caribbean Bank, Windward Islands Bank, NAGICO Insurance, Manrique Capriles and Sons, NV GEBE, and Scotiabank; schools AUC, CIA, Sister Marie Laurence Primary School.
Foundations and Service Clubs in the parade were the Indian Kids Community Service Club, Ladies Basketball Championships, Love of Kids, Safe Haven, Smiles for our Kids, St. Maarten Nurses and Social Workers Associations, USM Student Government and Queens from St. Maarten Carnival Development Foundation
The Bikers for Boobs Ride on October 4 was also a great event for the breast cancer cause. The ride was organized by the Elektralytes Foundation and Caribbean Eagles Club and saw a high number of women bikers sporting pink attire revving up the breast cancer message along the roads.
