PHILIPSBURG--The hammer hit the old metal brake drum with a loud thud. The referee signalled for the boxers to fight. It was the second bout on This is War card promoted by Bobby Ottley and B.O.S.E. Promotions at L.B. Scott Sports Auditorium Saturday night. The stands were half full.

Local fighter Sidney Maccow was to face Justin Gogulski from Curaçao. Barely a punch was thrown before Gogulski hit the canvas. Maccow celebrated. He was sent to a neutral corner. The referee started counting. Gogulski stood up. He indicated with a head shake he could continue.

The match was a super lightweight contest scheduled for four rounds.

Maccow's corner was yelling, "take your time. Take your time." There was a flurry of punches and Gogulski was down a second time.

Again Maccow's corner shouted, "take your time, take your time." But Maccow was not to be denied. Gogulski stood a second time but went down for a third and final knock out.

Maccow had won in 59 seconds of the first round. He was so fast; the Presidente Girls did not have the chance to strut around the ring with their round cards.

Maccow has been boxing for six years. Saturday night was his debut in a ring on St. Maarten.

The card listed seven fights. But there were only four. The first match was an exhibition contest between two young fighters from Marci's Mega Gym. Kai Piscione faced Anthony Philis.

After the match Piscione admitted, "We are training partners. We spar all the time. I think we hit harder in training then in the ring tonight."

Philis nodded his head in agreement as he unwound his hand wrap. "We just did not want to make any mistakes," said Piscione.

Avid athlete JP Piscione, who cycles, kayaks, bikes and runs, was at his son's side shortly after the match. He handed the boxer a drink and admitted, "As a father, I just do not like this sport. I know they wear equipment and it is safe but I just don't like it."

He went on to say his son and Philis train hard and he was proud of them.

The third fight of the evening was the IBO Female Heavyweight World Title match between the experienced Carlette "The Truth" Ewell (15-7-1, 9KOs) and Sonya Lamonakis (9-1-2, 1KO.) The match was scheduled for 10 rounds. Before the bell went clung, the four Presidente girls cuntorioned themselves between the ropes with their high heels and paraded the Championship belt around the ring for all to see.

The boxers touched gloves and went the distance often standing in the middle of the ring exchanging blows.

Lamonakis won the title in a split decision. She landed numerous blows to Ewell's face that snapped her head back.

The final bout of the night was the IBF Intercontinental Bantamweight Title fight between Elton Dharry (16-5-1, 10KOs) of Guyana and Jose Rios (13-1-1, 6KOs) of Nicaragua. Dharry won by decision.
