style="text-align: left;">PHILIPSBURG:--- Well placed information provided to SMN News states that allies from the United Peoples Party (UPP) approached the leader of the United St. Maarten Party (USP) Frans Richardson and asked him to join the current coalition. The source said that the UPP allies approached Richardson after MP Silvio Matser got his conviction on January 7th, 2015. However, SMN News learnt that a meeting was held at the UPP's head office some time ago. SMN News further learnt that the USP leader was given until Friday to make a decision on the proposal given to him by the UPP.
SMN News understands that the persons who approached the USP leader offered him the Ministry of Justice but the USP said the only way they will consider the proposal is if they get the Ministry of VROMI and Tourism.
In an invited comment leader of the USP MP Frans Richardson said on Thursday morning that he was indeed approached and that he is talking like every other politician. "Those that approached me offered me the Ministry of VROMI." MP Richardson said he is also listening to the people of St. Maarten and so far he did not even meet with his board to discuss the proposal from the UPP allies.
SMN News further learnt that the board of the USP will demand that the UPP leader Theodore Heyliger provide them with a letter from the Prosecutors Office stating that he is not under investigation for any crimes and will not be prosecuted. A member of the USP board said that before they agree to join the current coalition they need to secure a guarantee that the leader of the UPP will not face prosecution because his name has been called in too many criminal cases.
