Mp Ottley: Govt. Has Legal Tools To Set New Electricity, Water Rates

PHILIPSBURG--United Peoples party (UP) Member of Parliament (MP) Omar Ottley is calling on government to stop delaying meaningful relief for the people of St Maarten and immediately utilise the legal mechanisms already available to regulate electricity tariffs and fuel costs as done in Curaao.

SABA MISSING PERSON UPDATE 1:

As of 6:30 a.m. this morning Thursday May 14, 2026, Erik Matthijsen has not been found.
He was last seen on a hike in the Wells Bay area yesterday at around 11:00 a.m. He is a member of the team working on the Mount Scenery Tower project, in his 50s and is an active hiker.

A drone equipped with a thermal imaging camera was deployed yesterday evening with the assistance of SCF, and attempts were made to trace the phone.

Ser Board Inactive As Term Ends, Govt. Grant 1 Year Extension, Then Withdraws It

PHILIPSBURG, Sint Maarten Ongoing geopolitical tensions and conflicts in the Middle East have contributed to unpredictable fluctuations in global fuel prices, directly impacting the cost of fuel required to generate electricity in St. Maarten, which is beyond the control of NV GEBE.

As an island that depends heavily on imported fuel for power production, changes in global oil prices can significantly affect operational costs. The fuel clause is therefore adjusted monthly to reflect the actual cost of fuel used to generate electricity.
