Unbiased look at the Sint Maarten Elections
MARIGOT--The Semsamar board announced a number of events will take place in June for its 30th anniversary celebration at a press conference Monday.
The mixed capital company was formed by public and private partnerships on June 20, 1985, and now operates in St. Martin, Guadeloupe, Martinique, and French Guiana.
The anniversary will not only highlight Semsamar’s achievements over 30 years in the development of St. Martin but also promote its social objectives. As President Wendel Cocks points out, the company is not only concerned with construction of housing but equally interested in enhancing the way of life for tenants and residents in housing through social programmes and activities.
The first of the programme activities will be a special anniversary edition of the annual Inter Company Relay Race on June 7. This year an invitation will be extended to housing tenants to form a team.
Friday, June 19, will be open house at Semsamar where the public will be able to tour its headquarters opposite Marina Fort Louis from 10:00am to 5:00pm and learn about the company’s operations. That same evening a debate will be held from 6:00pm to 7:30pm to discuss the future objectives of Semsamar, allowing for the public’s input.
On Saturday, June 20, a sports day will be organised for all tenants and residents of Semsamar housing at the Alberic Richards Stadium in Sandy Ground from 8:30am to 5:00pm.
A meeting with young residents of Semsamar housing, between the ages of 15 to 25 will be held at the stadium from 10:00am to 12:00pm to understand their needs and concerns. This is a continuation of a process started in May where the objective is to come up with a social plan of activities for young people in the residences.
The company has another insertion project called “S’em ta route†where it helps young people seeking work to carry out maintenance such as painting and small repairs on its buildings.
The first group of 15 youths was taken on for this project to be organised between May 18 and 22. Once this project is finished the young people will be evaluated for their motivation and interests. There will be an opportunity for those who show keen interest to work with a company for two to three months and get paid.
The Semsamar Solidarity Foundation, its insertion arm Entreprise de Maintenance et d’Entretien (EME), employment office, and companies Steiner and ATP are all engaged in this initiative.
A free concert will be staged in Marigot in conjunction with the Collectivité on the theme “living together in St. Martin†on Saturday, June 20, from 8:00pm.
More details of these proposed events will be released as the dates draw near.
