PHILIPSBURG--Former Minister of Finance of the Netherlands Antilles Frank Mingo passed away at a hospital in Medellin, Colombia, at 11:50pm on Friday, August 14. He was 68.

Prime Minister Marcel Gumbs, Minister of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transport and Telecommunications Claret Connor and the Port expressed condolences to the Mingo family on his passing.

Connor also extended condolences to Princess Juliana International Airport SXM Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Regina Labega on the passing of her mother Lillian Mildred Labega-Rohan, also on Friday.

Mingo was a well-known businessman in St. Maarten in the LPG cooking gas field as well as a real estate developer. He served as Finance Minister for the former Netherlands Antilles from 1999 to late 2000. He also served as a Member of Parliament in the former Netherlands Antilles and at one point was an educator at Milton Peters College (MPC).

Mingo was born in Aruba on February 2, 1947, and was raised in St. Maarten. He attended school in Aruba and went to the Netherlands to further his studies. He returned to St. Maarten where he became involved in business, education and politics. He is the father of Port St. Maarten CEO Mark Mingo; TelEm official Brian Mingo and civil law notary Marlene Mingo.

In a press release over the weekend, the supervisory board of directors, management team and staff of Port St. Maarten extended their deepest condolences to Mark Mingo and the Mingo family on Frank Mingo’s passing.

Gumbs said in a separate press release on Sunday, “It was indeed sad to learn about the passing of Frank Mingo. I worked with him when I was State Secretary of Justice, General and Interior Affairs from 1998 to 2002. On behalf of the Council of Ministers, I extend our condolences to the immediate family and friends of Frank Mingo during their time of bereavement.”

Gumbs said he had ordered flags at the Government Administration Building in Philipsburg to be flown at half-mast out of respect for the former Minister and MP.

Connor said, “My prayers go out to both families during this difficult time. May both their souls rest in eternal peace. I also express my sympathy to the staff of Port St. Maarten and SXM Airport.”
