Unbiased look at the Sint Maarten Elections
SUCKER GARDEN – For the eighth consecutive year, the St. Maarten Lions Club honored young students of cycle 2 group 4 at the club’s annual Student Excellence Awards ceremony.
This year the title sponsor was N.V. GEBE as they have been the sponsor for the past three years. The St. Maarten Lions Club thanked the utility company for their valuable contributions.
The St. Maarten Lions Club the club recently invited 17 youngsters to the Lion’s Den on Sucker Garden Road, and acknowledged their performance in the presence of their families, teachers and peers. The selection of 17 youngsters by their respective schools was based solely on their social growth and/or contribution to the school and community.
The 17 very deserving students received a Certificate of Excellence, as well as a $360 gift voucher, which they may use towards any activity or interest of their choice. In the past, students have used their gift towards events such diving lessons or tablets. However, it can also be used to purchase a new baseball uniform, dance class, art classes, books, and more.
In his welcome remarks, Club President, Lion Eldert Louisa emphasized the importance of acknowledging, not only the academic performance of the youth, but also their social merits. It is their “social performance that will make them our leaders of tomorrow.â€
Minister of Education, Culture, Youth and Sports, Silveria Jacobs was proud of the 17 youngsters. She thanked the St. Maarten Lions Club for acknowledging them every year, expressed the importance of highlighting the good in the youth more often, and especially applauded the acknowledgment of students before the end of the school year.
Participating schools were: Ruby Labega, Leonard Connor, Prins Willem-Alexander, M.G. de Weever, Helmich Snijders Campus, Asha Stevens Campus, Oranje School, Dr. Martin Luther King, Sr. Borgia, Sr. Magda, Sr. Regina, Sr. Marie Laurence, St. Joseph, St. Dominic Primary, Seventh Day Adventist, Methodist Agogic Center (MAC) Reverend J.A. Gumbs and Browlia F. Maillard campuses.
