Editorial - Better now than later

It seems the formation of a new government might not go as smoothly as expected after all. Although “formateur” William Marlin (NA) presented Governor Eugene Holiday with his report and the incoming NA/DP/US coalition’s governing programme yesterday, DP leader Sarah Wescot-Williams confirmed that her party’s number two vote-getter Cornelius de Weever had indicated meanwhile that he preferred to occupy his seat in Parliament rather than remain Minister of Labour, Health and Social Affairs as intended.

This creates a problem, because DP quickly will have to choose another nominee to become one of its two cabinet members, while the names of all seven candidate ministers already had been submitted Read more

Governor To Be Notified Of New Coalition Agreement This Week

PHILIPSBURG, St. Maarten - Reliable sources have confirmed there is a new agreement consisting of eight (8) MPs-Elect to form a new coalition to govern the country for the next four years.

According to our sources the agreement has been signed between the UP party (7 seats) and Minister Cornelius de Weever (1 seat).

This new situation explains the trouble that the NA, US and DP coalition agreement experienced on Wednesday.

The contents of the report submitted to the Governor by formateur MP William Marlin on Wednesday afternoon is not known.

However in a press release on Wednesday evening the Governor stated that formateur William Marlin updated him on the formation process and that based on the evaluation of the information, the formateur was granted an extension until Friday October 3, 2014 to finalize his formation report.

In the meantime the leader of the UP party MP Theo Heyliger is expected to contact the Governor as soon as Thursday.

At that point he is expected to inform the Governor that he has the support of eight (8) MPs Elect to form the new government of St Read more

Remain vigilant and prevent mosquito breeding.

>GREAT BAY (DCOMM):--- The Collective Preventive Services (CPS), says that the community should remain vigilant in preventing mosquito breeding. Frequent rainfall allows mosquito's to breed when the rainwater gets trapped into containers around homes and businesses.

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO)/World Health Organization (WHO) have both recently appealed to countries that have mosquitoes that transmit dengue and chikungunya to step up their vector control efforts and prepare for a possible increase in patients suffering from these diseases.

The PAHO/WHO recommendations come as the peak transmission season for dengue approaches and following local transmission of chikungunya in a number of countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Resident's at home and owners of businesses are advised to continually take measures to mitigate the Aedes Aegypti mosquito that is responsible for the transmission of dengue and chikungunya.

Editorial - Solid enough

The names mentioned in today's paper as the reported candidates for the various positions of the incoming NA/DP/US-party coalition inspire confidence. The screening process will have to determine whether they all qualify in the end, but for now the apparent nominees certainly sound adequate.

It was already clear that NA leader William Marlin would be the next Prime Minister in charge of General Affairs, while the party's number three candidate and top vote-getter Silveria Jacobs had been a "shoo-in" to again become Minister of Education, Culture and Sports.

Whom NA would make its Minister of Public Housing, Spatial Development and the Environment VROMI was not known, but Rodolphe Samuel with his experience as President of Parliament certainly had been among the frontrunners for the job on the party's election list Read more

Editorial - Good advice

With all the excitement over the elections, comments in Monday's paper by the St. Maarten Hospitality and Trade Association (SHTA) on the proposed change in the Civil Code to tackle the abuse of short-term employment contracts should not go unnoticed. SHTA says this will prohibit practically all defined-term contracts and only make the labour market more rigid.

Candidates of various political parties campaigned on the issue, including current Minister of Health, Labour and Social Affairs Cornelius de Weever (DP) Read more

Editorial - Time will tell

It appears a new government is indeed on the horizon, now that three parties with a combined eight of the 15 seats in Parliament have reached agreement on the division of ministerial portfolios and other positions (see related story). The candidates for such are yet to be announced, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what some of the names involved might be.

NA is likely to nominate its political leader William Marlin as the new Prime Minister, while the party's number two candidate and top vote-getter Silveria Jacobs, having already served as Minister of Education, Culture, Youth and Sports, is favoured to take up that post again Read more
