St. Maarten – Between 20 and 25 percent of the population still does not have healthcare insurance, Public Health Minister
Cornelius de Weever
said at a press briefing of the
Democratic Party
yesterday. The numbers are improving, because in the recent past the number of uninsured citizens stood around 33 percent. De Weever said that his ministry has been quite busy with the National Health Insurance plan. People with an income below 5,000 guilders are insured by SZV, above that level they have to take out private insurance. “Some citizens are falling through the cracks. They are not insured by SZV, but they are also unable to take out a private insurance,†De Weever said. The minister mentioned cab drivers as a group that has trouble finding affordable medical coverage. “We want to bring them under the medical assistance program of the SZV. We will discuss this in Parliament on August 6.†Party-leader Sarah
Wescot-Williams
said that the party’s approach of implementing the National Health Insurance in stages has been consistent. “This is not an easy issue,†she said. We are committed to the promise of general basic medical insurance.â€
