PHILIPSBURG:--- Prime Minister Silveria Jacobs announced at the weekly press briefing that the government of St. Maarten have accepted the conditions set down by the Kingdom Council (Dutch Government) in order for St. Maarten to receive the loan they requested from the Kingdom to assist its people during the global pandemic of COVID-19.
Jacobs said that the country informed the Kingdom that the government accepts the condition as long as it does not trample on the other laws that guide the country.
Jacobs said the decisions taken by the government was done in the best interest of its people in mind, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic that affects everyone and every country.

Adjustments Made To Phased Reopening

PHILIPSBURG--Several adjustments have been made to the phased reopening plan of the country, with several businesses added and shifted within the reopening schedule.

Additionally, as of May 18, for Phase 2 of the reopening, businesses will be allowed to open from 6:00am to 8:00pm, from Mondays to Fridays. Businesses will continue to remain closed on Saturdays and Sundays to allow Collective Prevention Services (CPS) to conduct its community outreach programme to identify potential COVID-19 cases in the various districts.

PHILIPSBURG, Sint Maarten – On Wednesday, May 13th, the Council of Ministers met with the unions for a second time, to discuss the proposed cost-cutting measures for Government. Some of these suggestions directly influence Civil Servants, thus deeming it necessary to discuss these measures with the spokespersons of the Committee of Civil Servants Unions (CCSU). This was the second meeting held with the Unions to discuss cost-cutting measures. During the first meeting, Government made the following proposal: cut its own salary by another 5% which is a total 20% cut 10% off salaries over NA 8,000 Cut of vacation pay 2020 off salaries over NA 4000 Also included in the proposal is freezing or postponement of bonuses etc.
